cerita the vampire diares

The Vampire Diaries is a young adult vampire horror series of novels written by L. J. Smith. The story centers around Elena Gilbert, a high school girl torn between two vampire brothers. The series was originally a trilogy published in 1991; however, pressure from readers led the author to write a fourth volume, The Reunion, which was released the following year. After taking a hiatus from writing for several years, L. J. Smith announced in 1998 a new spin-off trilogy entitled The Vampire Diaries: The Return, continuing the series, with Damon as the main protagonist. The first installment, The Return: Nightfall, was released on February 10, 2009. The Return: Shadow Souls was released on May 6, 2010. The Return: Midnight is tentatively slated for release in 01 July 2010.

The Awakening

Elena Gilbert is the most beautiful and popular girl in Robert E. Lee High School. Adamant to triumph over personal tragedy - her parents' death in a car crash - Elena enters into her senior year of high school with the ferocious desire to be best at everything. The moment she spots the handsome new exchange student, Stefan Salvatore, Elena is determined to make him hers. However, for seemingly no reason at all, Stefan avoids Elena like the plague.

And then Stefan rescues Elena from a brutal admirer. Elena realises that Stefan may reciprocate her obsessive affection. But as the pair fall in love, their town of Fell's Church is being terrorised by inexplicable, horrifying 'animal attacks'. Too soon, Elena and Stefan's love faces a great peril: everyone thinks Stefan committed the crimes.

When Elena tries to confront Stefan, she discovers his terrible secret. Stefan is a five-hundred year old vampire, born in the Italian Renaissance. But Stefan isn't the one who has been committing the murders, the perpetrator is Stefan's diabolical brother, Damon Salvatore, who lives to wreak misery on Stefan's life. The two brothers were turned vampire by the coquettish German Lady Katherine von Swartzchild, whom they both loved. Katherine killed herself when the brothers refused to make peace with each other. The reason why Stefan initially avoided Elena was because Elena is a doppelganger of Katherine. For this same reason, Damon also chooses to pursue Elena.

Damon's methods of seduction are creepily romantic. He follows her around in the magical disguise of a crow and he invades her dreams. Despite the duress, Elena rejects Damon's advances and remains stoically loyal to Stefan.

Elena's rejection angers Damon. In a fit of rage, he provokes Stefan to fight.

In the aftermath, Stefan disappears. The townspeople of Fell's Church belive Stefan's disappearance cements the truth that Stefan is behind the attacks. However, Elena's sure she knows what's really happened. She thinks Damon is responsible for Stefan's disappearance, and she knows Stefan is in grave danger...

The Struggle

Picking up where The Awakening left off, Elena confronts Damon about Stefan's disappearance. But when Elena stands firm on her rejection of Damon's romantic advances, Damon refuses to help find Stefan. Elena must turn to her best friends, Bonnie McCullough and Meredith Sulez. Bonnie, who is a witch, uses magic to track down Stefan. The girls discover Stefan trapped in the bottom of a well, close to death. After Stefan's rescue, Elena offers him her blood to recover.

While Stefan's ordeal counters the town's belief that he perpetrated the horrific 'animal' attacks, Stefan still faces hostility in the town. And as the town's monumental anniversary,'Founder's Day' approaches, Elena reaches her breaking point.

Elena's adversary, Caroline Forbes, has stolen Elena's diary. Elena confesses all her secrets to her diary, and its contents can be read as evidence that Stefan is a violent criminal. Worried about Stefan's mental well-being, Elena enlists the help of her friends to retrieve the diary. Bonnie, Meredith and Elena try to break into Caroline's house to find the diary to no success, and Caroline's family comes home too soon. In a mad attempt to escape, Elena gets isolated from the two other girls. She discovers Damon lurking in the shadows of the Forbes house. Damon offers to help Elena's cause - if Elena gives him blood in return. Elena refuses.

Later, Damon manages to get invited into Elena's home by Elena's Aunt and Uncle. Lucky for Elena, her home consists of two separate houses, and her room is in a separate part of the house. But when Damon gives her a terrifying ultimatum, choosing between Damon bleeding Elena, or her baby sister, Margaret, Elena sacrifices herself. Damon compels Elena into a blood exchange.

Soon after, Elena tells Stefan about the diaries. Stefan tells Elena that even if Caroline reveals the contents of Elena's diary to the whole town, because of his love for Elena, Stefan will stay and fight for his innocence. Stefan then proposes to Elena, and they exchange blood.

On Founder's Day, Elena and her friends try their best to steal Elena's diary, but their attempts are futile. However, when Caroline tries to read the diary, it is discovered that the diaries have been switched - Caroline's reading her own diary. Damon had stolen back Elena's.

Damon smugly accepts Elena's thanks, but his satisfaction quickly turns to anger when he hears about Elena's engagement. Elena's Aunt and Uncle are also less than thrilled. Frustrated by their reactions, Elena storms off, borrowing her friend's car.

Elena angrily drives to Stefan's residence. But when she finally gets there, Stefan isn't home, and there is something peculiar going on with the weather. Elena thinks Damon's Powers may be responsible. But there's something malevolent about the weather. It is vicious and brutal, and it wants Elena dead...

The Fury

This book begins with the newly "turned" Elena watching Damon and Stefan engaged in a fight to the death. Initially she does not recognize the brothers due to her confused state, having recently died and risen as a Vampire, but soon a flicker of memory causes her to realize the one she loves is hurt and needs her help.

The reader is led to believe she is referring to Stefan, whom she has had a passionate relationship with throughout the first two volumes, but instead Elena attacks him, and fully intends to kill him for hurting Damon. Stefan, upon recognizing Elena, doesn't fight back and allows her to clumsily and savagely bite him. Damon eventually commands her to stop and takes her in search of human blood. Stefan intervenes, worried about the attention more dead bodies may bring, however he realises that Elena must drink human blood in order to complete her transformation into a vampire, otherwise she will die.. Stefan explains to Matt what has happened to Elena and convinces him to let her feed from him so she will complete the transition.

Afterwards Damon hides her in Alaric Saltzman's attic and once she has rested, her disorientation begins to lift. Elena is deeply upset about the way she attacked Stefan and sneaks out of Alaric's house, overhearing a conversation on her way which indicates the new history teacher is more than he appears. While wandering, trying to process all the new information, Elena stumbles upon her own memorial service. The great distress she feels watching this draws both Stefan and Damon to her. Stefan is relieved when Elena remembers their love and Damon is enraged, but the three are distracted by the strange behaviour of a large pack of the towns pet dogs. The dogs are all sitting, as if waiting for a command, until the owner of one of the dogs tries to approach her, the pack suddenly turns on him and he is only saved by Stefan's intervention.

More strange events lead the three vampires, with the help of Bonnie, Meredith, Matt and Alaric, to conclude that the same Power which forced Elena off of the bridge is still stalking the town and is targeting specifically Elena's loved ones. It transpires that Katherine, the vampire who turned Damon and Stefan, faked her own death some 500 years before in a vain attempt to bring the brothers closer so they could be her eternal companions. Her plan failed, and the brothers, hating one another more than ever, killed each other and, as they had both ingested Katherine's blood, they rose as Vampires. Katherine was infuriated by the brother's continuing feud, so she fled to Klaus, the one who had turned her into a vampire on her death bed. Under his teaching, Katherine became more powerful and quite unstable. In the end Elena has forgotten about the hate she had for Damon and she finds he's not evil, he's special.

Katherine learns that Stefan has fallen in love with Elena. Out of jealousy she plots an elaborate revenge, beginning with the systematic torture of Stefan. She eventually has Damon, Stefan and Elena tied up in an underground crypt where she plans to torture and dispose of them all. As Katherine debates the most preferable order and method of their deaths, Elena manages to free herself, forcing Katherine into a shaft of sunlight and tearing off her protective lapiz lazuli necklace. Elena holds Katherine there until the older vampire disintegrates and is badly burned herself as Katherine had already removed the protective ring from Elena's hand. Stefan pulls Elena back into the shadows but it is too late,Elena has died in Stefan's arms after she made him promise to take good care of Damon. The book ends with a diary entry from Bonnie, who admits that Elena was neither perfect nor a saint, but she made the ultimate sacrifice to save the town.

Dark Reunion

As a psychic, Bonnie has dreams of Elena in the Other World. But the dreams quickly turn frightening. A source of power has infiltrated Fells Church, putting it's inhabitants in danger. Not knowing what to do, Meredith, Matt, and Bonnie use a summoning spell to call for Stefan and Damon — but whose side is Damon on? This novel greatly expands Bonnie and Meredith as characters. Bonnie takes the leading role as she writes in the diary. She also finds a possible romance with Matt Honeycutt. After some research in the library Stefan realizes Tyler Smallwood is a werewolf. They concoct a plan and lure Tyler into the graveyard. After threatening him, Tyler reveals startling information about the killer. They find out Klaus, the vampire who made Katherine a vampire is the killer, and has captured Caroline. The four find out from Meredith's mad grandfather that the only thing that can weaken Klaus is White Ash wood. Klaus makes a deal with Stefan, "Come alone or the girl dies." Bonnie, Meredith and Matt try to persuade Stefan to take some of their blood to make him stronger but he refuses and warns them not to follow. They ignore his threat and follow. They see Stefan with a branch of White Ash wood and Bonnie realizes it's a trap and cries out to Stefan before he gets hurt. There is a fight at the old Francher place deep in the Old Wood. They are losing the fight and Stefan is on the brink of death. Damon appears out of nowhere and proves his loyalty as he stakes Klaus. However, Klaus isn't hurt badly, and he attacks Damon. Bonnie screams for Elena. She appears as a glowing mist along with the spirits of Civil War soldiers that had fought and died in Fell's Church. They charge Klaus and carry him away. The ending is the most surprising yet for Elena's friends as she almost leaves forever and then is granted other change to come back to life she takes it and comes back to life

The Return: Nightfall

When Elena sacrificed herself to save the two vampire brothers who love her — the handsome, brooding Stefan and the sleek and dangerous Damon, she was consigned to a fate beyond death until a powerful supernatural force pulled her back. Now Elena is not just human. She has powers and gifts that were bestowed on her in the afterlife. What's more, her blood pulses with an overwhelming and unique force that makes her blood irresistable to any vampire. Stefan wants to find a way to keep Elena safe so that they can make a life together. But Fell's Church is in danger again. Two magical fox spirits named Shinichi and Misao have been drawn to the town. These two creatures, called "Kitsune" manage to control Damon, using "Malach" which take control of his body. Under their influence, Stefan is lured away from Fell's Church with promises of mortality again. He leaves a note on Elena's computer explaining to her the reasons of his departure. He tells her to trust her friends until he gets back. Damon, under the control of the Malach and the Kitsune, changes the note so that it now reads that Stefan is leaving for good and that he leaves Damon the responsibility of looking after Elena. Later, Meredith learns that Damon changed the note from a backup file on the computer. Once they learn that Damon changed it they try to figure out why and learn that he was possesed by one of the malach the whole time. Elena then helps Damon remember who he really is by destroying the Malach inside him. When the two confront the Kitsune, Shinichi only agrees to tell them the whereabouts of Stefan's prison if he can take away all Damon's memories of the past time he has spent with Elena. They agree. Only after Shinichi does this does Elena realize why this was such a price to pay. Damon forgets his repentance and the friendship and alliance he has come to have with Elena, Bonnie, Meredith and Matt. The book ends with Damon, Elena, and Matt driving off to find Stefan.

The Return: Shadow Souls

A penitent Damon, along with Elena and Matt, follows Stefan into the darkest dimension in an attempt to set him free from the prison he has been tricked into instead of the salvation he was seeking. When Matt sees Elena and Damon getting too close he turns back and sends Bonnie and Meredith to inform Elena what's happening back home. Bonnie and Meredith join Elena as all three are forced to enter as slaves; the chained and leashed property of a vampire – Damon. Elena Gilbert is once again at the center of magic and danger beyond her imagination. And once more, Stefan isn't there to help. Elena is forced to entrust her life to Damon, the handsome but deadly vampire who wants Elena, both her body and soul. They must journey to the slums of the Dark Dimension, a world where vampires and demons roam free, but humans must live as slaves of their supernatural masters. During this time, Elena becomes closer to Damon, adding a choice to her already mixed up life, What brother does she really want? Stefan is imprisoned here, and only Elena can free him by finding the two hidden halves of the kitsune key to his cell. Damon, Elena, Bonnie, and Meredith must all fit into the world of the Dark Dimension and venture into its deadly high society. Only by these means may they be able to find Stefan's keys to release him and then Elena will be able to reunite with her soulmate. While this is going on, back home Matt is hiding from the law and trying to fight the evil kitsune who are destroying the very core of their community. Matt enlists the help of the local doctor and her nephew, the boarding house owner, and Isobel's grandmother, who was once a priestess, to keep their home together until Elena, Stefan, and Damon return. Elena later finds out the gift she got from the Kitsune is a flower that can turn a vampire into human. When getting back to the boarding house Damon's curiosity gets the better of him and the flower turns him human with one smell. The flower was supposed to be for Stefan, who is now stuck as a vampire, and is trying to make a better relationship for him and Elena. Damon, on the other hand, wants nothing to do with humanity and is now stuck a human. Stefan and Damon only wish they could switch places (Damon as a vampire, and Stefan as a human).

Main characters

  • Elena Gilbert There are repeated references in the series that state that she looks like an angel. She is beautiful, slender and pale, with long blonde hair and blue eyes "the color of lapis lazuli". Her parents died, in a fatal car accident, when she was younger and she is raised by her Aunt Judith. Over the course of the series, Elena transforms from an 'ice queen' to a more open-minded person. Bonnie comments in Elena's diary when she first died that Elena was far from perfect and while she was never an angel, she died a good person. Elena breaks up with Matt Honeycutt around when school starts, feeling he has become more to her than one of her disposable boyfriends; she loves him like a friend or brother. Elena is good at leading and initiating action but can be overly aggressive. Elena is madly in love with Stefan Salvatore though she does recognize that she also has feelings for Damon, his brother. Stefan initially attempts to ignore Elena. He makes comparisons between her and former vampire girlfriend Katherine, though he realizes that beneath the looks they are very different people. Her school reputation is important to her, so she makes up a fake boyfriend to hide the fact Stefan has rejected her advances. She dies several times, changing from human to vampire (after she gets enough blood from both Salvatore brothers, where her killer, Katherine, thought she only got blood from one boy) to spirit (after an unknown power brings her back). In The Return: Nightfall she comes back perfectly normal albeit with supernatural powers intact, making her blood irresistible to all beings. Elena has an incredibly strong romance with Stefan Salvatore, which is the basis of the series, though in the later books she starts to fall for Damon too. In the television show, Elena is portrayed with brown hair, tan skin and brown eyes and is adopted into the Gilbert family. She also is shown to have a more congenial personality to that of Elena in the books.
  • Stefan Salvatore is portrayed as very handsome and pale, with wavy, dark, brown hair, fine features, and deep oak green eyes. He is not imposingly tall, but he is taller than his brother Damon. However, Stefan is the weaker brother due to the fact that he chooses not to drink human blood. He lives off animal blood, which lessens his Powers. His powers include being able to read at increased speed. He is in love with Elena and is willing to do anything he can to protect her, even if it means killing his own brother. In the TV series, Stefan has a stronger aversion to human blood, and never drinks it, while in the books, he and Elena share blood as a sign of their love.
  • Damon Salvatore Stefan's amoral vampire brother. Events in The Fury and Dark Reunion show that Damon is also capable of fierce loyalty and affection, though he is often misunderstood. He is very handsome, with black hair, pitch black eyes, pale skin and has a slim body type. He is described a couple of times as being "almost better looking than Stefan" by first Bonnie, and then Elena. Throughout the series he is also portrayed as a very dark seductive figure. His history dates back to Renaissance Italy. He shows feelings towards both Elena and Bonnie, though Elena receives more attention. Damon's morality is always in question—and he is constantly suspected of mischief. In The Fury, Katherine offers to let Damon live and for him to reign in the shadows, an offer both Elena and Stefan believe he will accept, though in the end he tells her, "Go to hell." Damon is described as extremely relentless. He never takes danger too seriously and possesses a dark sense of humor, as well as very little regard for human life in contrast with his brother Stefan. Damon is regarded as one of the strongest vampires who reside on Earth, this comes from all the blood he's taken in. He has deep feelings for Elena, especially in The Fury, that is not understood by others. In The Return: Shadow Souls it is also revealed that Elena also has very strong feelings for Damon, but does not share this knowledge with any of her friends, supporting their beliefs that Damon is taking advantage of her.

  • Bonnie McCullough One of Elena's best friends, a small girl with deep brown eyes, a Heart shape face, curly red hair and pinkish, peachy skin. Bonnie, a witch, is overwhelmed by her powers, and attempts to repress the true extent of them without much success. She begins to develop feelings for Damon, though she feels an attraction to Matt Honeycutt, although Matt is still in love with Elena. Bonnie is often said to resemble a kitten—cute, small, and relatively harmless, though she has strong psychic powers. Damon thinks of her as 'his little bird' often during The Return: Nightfall. Bonnie can be expansive and visionary but can be damsel-in-distress like. Her name is changed to Bonnie Bennett in the television series.
  • Meredith Sulez Elena's other friend; she is tall with olive skin, greenish-brown eyes and long black hair. Meredith is beautiful and somewhat cautious, sticks to her decisions, and is often the voice of reason throughout the series. She is perceived to be mentally stronger than Bonnie, saving her life on numerous occasions. She falls in love with Alaric Saltzman and has a long distance relationship with him. She does not appear in the television series.
  • Matt Honeycutt Elena's ex-boyfriend. He's a typical All-American high school quarterback with blond hair, light blue eyes and tan skin. While Matt is heartbroken at losing Elena to Stefan, he accepts it. He continues to be very protective of Elena. Matt is extremely jealous of Stefan and still pines for Elena, though he helps Stefan escape the Haunted House on the night of the attack, but afterward begins to think that Stefan might have killed Mr. Tanner. Later in the series the relationship between Stefan and Matt is closer to that of best friends. He is forgiving, loyal and is described as the friendly boy-next-door type. In the television show, Matt's last name has been changed to Donovan and is the older brother of Vickie Bennett (changed to Donovan in the show)
  • Caroline Forbes A former friend and current rival of Elena's. She is very beautiful, tall and thin with dark green eyes, bronze skin and glossy auburn hair. Caroline is manipulative, vengeful and desperate for attention from any boy she can find during much of the series. She steals Elena's diary and plans to read it to the town on Founder's Day, revealing that Stefan is a vampire, though this is unsuccessful. She has a brief relationship with Tyler Smallwood, working together to plan revenge on Elena and Stefan. Later she is kidnapped by Klaus and Tyler, and held hostage, but saved by Stefan and his friends. At the end of 'The Return : Nightfall, Caroline reveals that she is pregnant and blames it on Matt, forcing him to flee with Elena and Damon. In the television series, Caroline is portrayed as a best friend to Elena and Bonnie.
  • Katherine Von Swartzchild The young vampire whom Damon and Stefan both fell in love with when they were humans during the Italian Renaissance. Katherine turned the two brothers into vampires in an attempt to be happy with both brothers, instead of having to choose between them. When this didn't work she staged her 'suicide' by going into the sunlight without her ring, leaving behind a pile of ashes in one of her dresses. The two brothers fought to the 'death' because of her loss. She physically resembles Elena which caused Stefan's initial attraction to Elena, though he later realized that Elena was emotionally stronger than Katherine, who was docile and gentle as was the standard in Renaissance Italy. She is revealed to be the Other Power that is damaging the town and is killed by Elena. Katherine dies in 'The Fury' from burning to death after Elena pushed her into a shaft of sunlight. In the television series, her name is Katherine Pierce.
  • Alaric Saltzman The new young History teacher that was in suspicion of being a vampire hunter when he was in fact studying vampires ever since he discovered that they were real. He has dirty blond hair, soulful hazel eyes and pale skin. He falls in love with Meredith later on, and has a long distance relationship with her while he goes abroad to further his studies. Alaric is good at power-seeking and has high material goals. In the TV series, Alaric is driven by a personal tragedy and falls for Jenna Sommers, Elena and Jeremy's aunt. Also in the TV series, he was married young to a woman named Isobel (Elena's real mother) who leaves him and becomes a vampire. Damon kills him but he comes back alive, claiming that Isobel gave him a ring that protects him from vampires.
  • Klaus Is an Old One (one of the original vampires) who fights the Salvatore brothers, in the end losing to the spirits of Elena and the old cemetery. He was a mentor to Katherine, whom she thought she had killed. He has white-blond hair, light blue eyes and pale skin. Klaus has keen abilities and has the capacity to be a fine leader but has a natural instinct to dominate and be the boss. Klaus was the one who transformed Katherine into a vampire.

[edit] Supporting characters

  • Judith Gilbert Elena's aunt. She moved in with Elena and her baby sister Margaret right after the death of the girl's parents. She is the sort of woman who always looked vaguely flustered; she had a thin, mild face and flyaway red hair pushed back untidily. She is engaged to, later married to, Robert, though she briefly broke the engagement after Elena's death, thinking it was the best for Margaret. She is caring and one of the last people Elena talks to before dying the first time. Her name is changed to Jenna Sommers in the TV adaptation.
  • Tyler Smallwood A direct descendant of the Smallwoods that were present at the founding of Fells Church. In the first book, Tyler took Elena away to the graveyard where she saw his grandfather's grave. Tyler makes an aggressive move for Elena and to Meredith later on in the books. Stefan comes to save her and Tyler has hated the two ever since. He is later revealed to be a werewolf, it was dormant until he knew how to activate the werewolf gene. He is also the unknowing father of Caroline's unborn baby at the end of The Return: Nightfall. He is tall and muscular with black hair, pale skin and dark eyes. His name is changed to Tyler Lockwood in the television Series. He is shown to have a bitter rivalry with Jeremy Gilbert instead of Stefan and Elena, similar to the novel.
  • Vickie Bennett was at the cemetery with Elena when they left the dance. She had stayed there in the church with Dick. She was attacked and that caused her to go insane and she accused Elena of being part of it. Then she is accused of killing Sue because she relapsed after her death and she was the only one present, however after the turnaround of events and her transition away from the "fast crowd", it is considered unlikely by her new friends. When Bonnie and Meredith go to her house, she catatonically says that the murderer said she is next. She is left under the protection of Damon by his brother Stefan, but is later violently murdered by Klaus. She is small with light brown hair and dark brown eyes. Her name is Changed to Vickie Donovan and is portrayed as being Matt's older sister in the television Series. She is also turned into a vampire early in the series by Damon and is staked by Stefan in the following episode when her new desire for blood overwhelms her and she bites Elena.
  • Margaret Gilbert Elena's much younger sister, who is 4 years old. Elena considers her to be very innocent, and even secretly talks to her as a vampire after her death, saying that it is not yet her time to rejoin her deceased parents. She has platinum blond hair, pink, peachy skin and light blue eyes. In The Fury, Margaret is almost attacked by Katherine in the form of a cat. In the television series, Margaret's character is replaced in that of being a four year old girl to being a fifteen year old adolescent named Jeremy Gilbert.
  • Mr. Tanner Elena and Stefan's history teacher. Damon killed Tanner in the haunted house at the Halloween dance in The Awakening, his body found by Bonnie later on.
  • Mrs. Flowers Owner of the boarding house where Stefan lives, they once thought her to just be a crazy old woman, but, during The Return: Nightfall, she is revealed to be a witch like Bonnie and helps the friends search for Elena in the woods. She does not appear in the television series.
